AO & EO Crystal | A piezoelectric transduceris bonded to an anisotropic medium. When an electricalsignal is applied to this transducer to generateultrasonic waves which are propagated through themedium, a three dimensional grating was formed byvirtue of refractive index variation associatedwith the traveling acoustic wave. The incident beampassing through the medium will be coupled intoseveral symmetrical diffraction orders, just asin a two-dimensional diffraction grating. There are two kinds of E-O modulations. One is longitudinalE-O modulation if the directions of electric fieldand light propagation are the same. The KDP isomorphiccrystals are normally used in this scheme. If thedirections of electric field and light propagationare perpendicular, it is called transverse E-O modulation.The LiNbO3, MgO:LiNbO3, ZnO:LiNbO3, BBO and KTPcrystals are usually employed in this scheme.
